Norman Cellars

The Mermaid Inn features Norman cellars dating back to 1156, which remain in use today for wine storage.

French raiders destroy the original Mermaid Inn along with the town of Rye on June 22, 1377. The inn is rebuilt in 1420 and has served as a place of hospitality ever since. The 1156 cellars are the only surviving part of the original building.

Today, the cellars are in continuous use as part of The Mermaid Inn, which welcomes visitors from around the world on one of the most photographed streets in the UK.
