Norman Conquest Walks & Talks at Pevensey Castle

Discover Pevensey Castle, the landing place of the Norman invasion in 1066 and the site of the first Norman defences in England.

Built around AD 290, Pevensey is the largest of the Roman “Saxon Shore” fortresses. Its impressive walls, stretching over 500 metres, still stand to nearly their full height. In 1066, William the Conqueror lands here and establishes a fortress within the existing Roman defences. The site later returns to military use in 1940, when Second World War defences, including camouflaged machine-gun posts, are installed within its walls.

Guided tours lead visitors through the castle’s rich history, from the Roman period to the Norman Conquest and the Second World War. Exhibitions reveal stories of sieges, violence, and royal prisoners, as well as the experiences of soldiers during the 20th century. A reconstructed 1940 commander’s office offers further insight into wartime life.
