Founded in 1077 by Abbot Paul of Caen, St Albans Abbey (now a Cathedral) stands as a lasting reminder of the dramatic events that re-shaped England in the years following the Norman Conquest.

To celebrate this milestone, we invite you to revisit the most famous date in English history: 1066. The story is familiar from the Bayeux Tapestry - William the Conqueror's invasion of England and the death of King Harold, famously depicted as an arrow striking his eye. But why has 1066 endured in the national memory above all other dates? And why do the events of that year continue to matter nearly a thousand years later?
