The Norman Gateway

Emma of Normandy and Fecamp Abbey

Rye Castle is a 13th-century defensive structure.

For Millenium 2027, the first-floor area features audiovisual displays telling the story of Emma of Normandy, her connection to Fécamp Abbey, and the role that Rye, then part of the estate of Rameslie, plays in the years leading up to the Norman invasion in 1066.

A digital exhibition of the Bayeux Tapestry is presented in one of the castle turrets as part of this display. A short animated film illustrates Rye’s connection to Fécamp Abbey, while digital projection on an existing map table shows the possible landing sites and routes taken by William the Conqueror.

The exhibition also highlights the Norman influence on Rye in the years following 1066.
