Echoes from the North: a pan-European symphonic celebration of Norman heritage

TRIORCA INTERNATIONAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA

From August 9 to 21, 2027, the Triorca International Youth Orchestra will lead an ambitious residency followed by a concert tour across Normandy, bringing together 80 to 100 exceptional young musicians from all over Europe. Based at the Grenier de la Mothe, an artistic residency venue near Rouen, the project represents a major contribution to the MILLENNIUM – European Year of the Normans, celebrating a thousand years of shared history through music, creativity, and cultural exchanges.

At the heart of Echoes from the North lies a symphonic journey tracing the history of the Normans across Europe, from their Nordic origins to their lasting cultural legacy in France, England, and the Mediterranean basin. Through a series of concerts (venues being confirmed), the orchestra explores themes of migration, identity, conquest, and cultural blending that characterize Norman history.

A pan-European composition competition invites young composers from partner countries to create a new orchestral fanfare inspired by the traditions of medieval Norman singing, reinterpreted for the 21st century. This new work, commissioned for the occasion, serves as a musical thread throughout the tour, symbolizing both the deep roots and the constantly evolving future of European culture.

With a strong commitment to education and accessibility, Triorca engages young people in Normandy through open rehearsals, workshops, and free admission for those under 18. The project aims to inspire the new generation while making this historic anniversary widely accessible. By bringing together musicians, composers, and audiences from all over Europe, the initiative reflects the core values of the MILLENNIUM program: artistic excellence, international cooperation, and the renewal of shared European heritage.

• Franck — Symphony in D minor
• Walton — Suite Richard III
• Respighi — Vetrate di Chiesa
