Pearls of the Sea Exhibition – Stitching stories inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry

As the town whose story is immortalised in the tapestry, this project gives pupils in Hastings a unique opportunity to explore their local heritage and see how narrative, identity, and place can be expressed through art.

Working with professional artists, local primary school students will create textile panels that will be stitched together into one large collaborative tapestry, echoing the collective storytelling tradition of the original Bayeux Tapestry.

By connecting the past with the present, the project empowers pupils to see themselves as part of Hastings’ ongoing story, strengthening pride, curiosity, and a sense of belonging.

The completed work will be showcased in a free public exhibition at Hastings Contemporary from March to May 2027.
