Pressagny, from the time of the Vikings to William.
from 22 May 2027
to 23 May 2027
This exhibition is part of the medieval market organized by the **Maison pour Tous de Pressagny-l’Orgueilleux** association.
It offers a chance to discover a pivotal period in European history: **the transformation of Normandy, from Viking incursions to the formation of a powerful duchy, and then the rise of William the Conqueror**.
Between the 9th and 11th centuries, the Seine Valley experiences Viking raids. As they travel up the river, the Scandinavians pillage abbeys and gradually settle in a region that becomes Normandy.
In Pressagny-l’Orgueilleux, located at a strategic point on the Seine, local accounts mention the establishment of a Viking camp near the Goulet around the mid-9th century. This presence leaves a lasting mark on the territory, amidst destruction and the gradual settlement of the newcomers. Over time, these populations become sedentary, adopting the language and religion of the Franks, giving birth to the Normans, blending Scandinavian heritages and Frankish culture. This evolution leads to the creation of the Duchy of Normandy and then to the rise of William the Conqueror, whose epic in 1066 profoundly transforms European history.
The exhibition features a **selection of photographs and engravings** that illustrate this history and accompany the visitor on this journey through time.
