Reading Water Fest
Reading and the Normans edition
Reading Water Fest 2027 is a vibrant, free family festival celebrating Reading’s rich waterways, heritage and community spirit through the theme of Reading and the Normans. Taking place along the River Thames and River Kennet, the event brings together residents, visitors, schools, community groups, artists, performers and heritage organisations for a day of discovery, creativity and celebration.
Building on the success of previous Water Fests, the 2027 event will explore the important role that the rivers played in Reading’s development during the Norman period and how this legacy continues to shape the town today. Through a programme of engaging activities, families are invited to discover the stories, people and places that helped establish Reading as an important medieval centre following the Norman Conquest.
The festival features a wide range of free performances, hands-on workshops, arts and crafts activities, storytelling sessions and family entertainment designed to engage audiences of all ages. Children and young people will have opportunities to take part in creative making activities inspired by Norman history, while schools will be invited to participate in educational workshops and projects that connect local heritage with learning and creativity.
A highlight of the festival will be a Norman re-enactor village, where visitors can step back in time and experience daily life in medieval England. Through living history displays, demonstrations, traditional crafts, costumed interpreters and interactive activities, families will gain a unique insight into the lives of the people who lived in Reading during the Norman era.
Alongside heritage activities, Water Fest will continue to celebrate Reading’s waterways and the role they have played in the town’s growth, prosperity and cultural identity. Community organisations, environmental groups and cultural partners will work together to create an inclusive programme that encourages people to explore the rivers, learn about local history and enjoy shared cultural experiences.
Free and accessible to all, Reading Water Fest 2027 provides a welcoming and engaging day out for residents and visitors alike, celebrating the town’s Norman heritage while showcasing the creativity, diversity and community spirit that make Reading unique. Through history, performance, learning and participation, the festival strengthen connections between people, place and the waterways that have shaped Reading for centuries.
