Exhibition: Roger de Montgomery and the Normans

The castle at Arundel was just the beginning ...

Roger de Montgomery, Duke William of Normandy’s trusted childhood friend, becomes Earl of Arundel when William is crowned King of England. This exhibition explores Roger’s development of the original motte-and-bailey castle at Arundel, West Sussex.
Roger stands among the greatest magnates in England during the reign of William the Conqueror.
William grants him almost all of what is now West Sussex, known at the time of the Domesday Survey as the ‘Rape of Arundel’.
