The Other Conqueror

On the occasion of Millenium, this project highlights the historical links that unite Normandy to the south of Italy, particularly Sicily and Calabria. Through a cultural and historical approach, it focuses on the legacy left by the Normans in these territories and their influence on their political, cultural, and social development. It particularly helps to better understand the role of Roger I of Hauteville, nicknamed "the other conqueror," as well as that of Roger II, a major figure in the construction of the Norman kingdom of Sicily.

The project is based on a strong dimension of sharing and cooperation between the territories. An exhibition organized in Sicily, complemented by a program of conferences, promotes the dissemination of knowledge and meetings between cultural, scientific, and institutional actors from the regions involved.

In the spirit of Millenium, this initiative contributes to discovering a common history that transcends borders. While Normandy, Sicily, and Calabria are located at the extremes of Europe, they are linked by a shared past inherited from the Norman epic. Conquests, exchanges, and reciprocal influences have shaped their identities and left traces still visible today in their heritage and culture.
By highlighting these historical ties, the project reflects on what brings European territories closer together beyond geographical distances. Based on the Norman heritage, it shows how a common history can nourish dialogue between peoples, enhance mutual understanding, and help construct a shared vision of Europe, bridging memory, transmission, and the future.
