The signs of a new era

Exhibition, works by MaPie BelGary

In 2027, the Abbey of Hambye invited the artist MaPie BelGary and entrusted her with the creation of a contemporary exhibition in close dialogue with the spiritual and artistic history of the monument.

MaPie BelGary, a master artisan chaser, trained at the École Boulle, is known for her work on light, material, and gesture. An heir to the crafts, she develops a sensitive approach that is both artisanal and contemporary. From her workshop in Cérences, close to the abbey, she imagines a series of creations tailored to this place that inspires her particularly.

In the exhibition "The Signs of a New Time," she pays tribute to the decorated initials, the first letters of the chapters of medieval manuscripts, symbolic forms at the boundary between writing and image.

Through about fifteen wall sculptures using the technique of chasing combined with various materials (paper prints, marble powder, chased and/or enameled metal plates, pigment paintings...), the artist invites visitors to share a sensitive experience shaped by rhythms, materials, repetitions, variations, and deformations... All these experiments aim to reveal a living letter, revealing multiple meanings.

A second part of the exhibition highlights the connections between medieval decorated initials and Viking chasing, through small pieces made of chased metal, recalling Norman history as a territory of mixing and transmissions.

An aerial installation in the choir of the abbey church completes the exhibition.

Thought of as a bridge between past and present, "The Signs of a New Time" thus offers a unique encounter between heritage and contemporary creation, where the sign becomes a space for reflection, slowness, and listening.
