T.A. Steinlen's trip to Norway in 1901

October 19 2026 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM

Conference given by Karianne ContactBrevick

Built just before Norway's independence, the account of this journey is a valuable testimony of what this region was like then, seen through the eyes of a Parisian artist at the turn of the 20th century.
After collaborating with the satirical magazine Simplicissimus, T.A. Steinlen went on a mission to Norway in 1901 with Albert Langen, publisher of Hamsun, Bjørnson, Ibsen, Lie, and other authors claiming to be Norwegian at a time when Norway was Swedish and its literary tradition Danish. During this trip, Steinlen wrote daily postcards to his daughter Colette, who was 12 years old and living in Montmartre.

This correspondence is preserved by the Friends of Steinlen association and a private collector.

Relying on these moving archival documents, Karianne Brevick has also followed in Steinlen's footsteps. She invites the public to take this journey with her!
