TAPESTRY

Exploring the Bayeux Tapestry through an original theatre/opera production

Performance, Spring 2027: An original play/opera ‘Tapestry’ set in 1076, ten years after the Battle of Hastings. The story centres on Queen Matilda, Gytha (Harold’s mother) and Cearo (a fictional Anglo-Saxon seamstress) as they converge on the making of the Tapestry. The play explores women’s power, grief and resistance at a time of war and conquest. Performed as theatre or opera with a professional cast, with community participants as seamstresses and chorus. The production includes the first known depiction of Halley’s Comet (1066) and poses the intriguing question of a subversive act hidden in the Tapestry that is still visible today.
