The Thursdays of the Baronnie - Being a knight and waging war in the 11th-13th centuries

28 January 2027

Conference

Hugo Fresnel, lecturer in medieval history at the University of Picardy, associate member of CRAHAM – University of Caen Normandy, is hosting a conference dedicated to the rules and ideals of chivalric warfare in the central Middle Ages.

He explores the art of combat as a cultural and political fact, at the heart of an aristocratic thought valuing prowess, honor, and clemency. But behind these stated norms, the reality proves to be more nuanced: the conference also revisits moments of rupture and exception, notably the Battle of Hastings, where the chivalric ideal confronts the brutality of history.
