The Thursdays of the Baronnie - Guillaume in literature and cinema in the 19th and 20th centuries.
25 November 2027
Conference
Véronique Gazeau, emeritus professor of Medieval History at the University of Caen Normandy and member of CRAHAM, proposes to examine the image of William the Conqueror through time.
Portrayed by medieval chroniclers and the Bayeux Tapestry as a powerful war leader, a man of action, husband and builder of a cross-Channel state, William is one of the major figures of 11th century Europe. But how has this image been taken up, reinvented, or transformed by the literary and cinematic works of the 19th and 20th centuries? Between fidelity to the Middle Ages and new messages, the conference explores the multiple faces of the Conqueror and the creation of a legend.
