The Thursdays of the Baronnie - The Language of Guillaume

26 November 2026

Conference

Catherine Bougy, honorary lecturer in French linguistics and dialectology of Normandy at the University of Caen Normandy, presents an exciting investigation into the language of William the Conqueror.

Due to the lack of direct evidence, it is not possible to know precisely what language the duke-king spoke. However, literary texts produced in the Norman and Anglo-Norman spaces during the 11th and 12th centuries provide solid hypotheses. These avenues are reinforced by the study of current Norman dialects and contemporary English, which retains many traces of the language introduced in England by William and his barons. A conference where linguistics sheds new light on history.
