The Thursdays of the Baronnie - Writing in the Middle Ages: the manuscripts of Mont Saint Michel
October 28 2027 from 8:30 PM to 10:00 PM
Conference
Stéphane Lecouteux, research engineer and head of the Library, Heritage, and Mediation sector at Normandie Livre & Lecture, associated member of CRAHAM – University of Caen Normandy, proposes to dive into the heart of the copying workshop of the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel between 980 and 1100.
From the study of parchments, inks, scripts, and illuminated decorations, he reveals the evolution of the practices of scribes and illuminators and shows how the Mont-Saint-Michel scriptorium plays a major role in the development of Romanesque art in Normandy. An exciting exploration of books as works of art and witnesses to a Middle Ages in full intellectual effervescence.
