Digital Exhibition

As part of the European Year of the Normans, the Château Guillaume-le-Conquérant is hosting a second digital exhibition dedicated to its history and restoration.

Presented as a free audiovisual projection lasting about ten minutes in the Saint-Nicolas room, this creation retraces the major renovation campaigns that have allowed the monument to endure through the centuries. Two key periods are highlighted: the initial preservation efforts in the 19th century, which were essential for safeguarding the remains, and the extensive restorations carried out in the 20th and 21st centuries, which led to the current rehabilitation and enhancement of the site's civil and military architecture.

Archive documents, photographs, plans, and visual reconstructions illuminate the issues of heritage conservation, the successive architectural choices, and the directions that have guided restorers over time.

The program includes a conference dedicated to Norman heritage and the restoration of the castle, led by Bruno Decaris, chief architect of historic monuments. Responsible for the second major phase of work, he offers expert insight into the technical, scientific, and heritage-related challenges associated with the preservation of a major site in Norman and European history.
