The portrait, an ancient art!

This event offers an original discovery of the art of portraiture during the time of William the Conqueror. Through court life and the modes of representation in the Middle Ages, it invites a better understanding of how men and women of that period constructed and transmitted their image.

At a time of smartphones and social networks, usages have profoundly evolved. How do we preserve the memory of a person before the invention of photography? Are there portraits of William the Conqueror and his entourage? What do they reveal about their status, power, or identity? What is a court portrait? These questions are answered through illustrations, objects, children's albums, and various mediation supports.

The event begins with an interactive lecture lasting about thirty minutes dedicated to the art of portraiture in the 11th century. It continues with a creative workshop of one hour that combines photography and collage, allowing participants to explore the codes of representation while creating a personal piece.

Designed for both children and adults, this activity blends history, observation, and artistic practice. It offers an opportunity to discover how images were used in the Middle Ages to tell a person's story, assert a role, or stage power.
