Warrington's Lost Castle: Walking the Norman Landscape

February 20 2027 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Warrington's Lost Castle: Walking the Norman Landscape

Rediscovering Warrington's hidden medieval past

Warrington's Lost Castle: Walking the Norman Landscape invites the public to rediscover the story of Warrington's largely lost medieval castle and the landscape in which it once stood.

Beginning at The Bulls Head in Warrington, participants will explore the historic castle area around St Elphin's, using historic maps, documentary research and surviving clues in the landscape to investigate what we know about the castle, what has been lost, and the questions that still remain.

Although Warrington Castle has almost completely disappeared from the modern townscape, its story provides a fascinating window into Warrington's medieval past and its connections with the wider Norman world.

The walk forms the opening event in Warrington's Lost Castle: Rediscovering a Norman Past, a programme of public heritage activity being developed for the European Year of the Normans 2027. Throughout the year, the project will explore the castle through community engagement, archaeological investigation, historical research and digital reconstruction, helping local people reconnect with a part of Warrington's heritage that has largely disappeared from view.
