William the Conqueror & Marcel Proust. Normandy shared.
from 27 February 2027
to 31 October 2027
Thematic Journey within the Exhibition
During his passage to England, William the Conqueror made a lasting mark on the estuary of the Dives. For nearly a thousand years, his memory continues to enrich local history. This exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the Duke of Normandy by exploring how the 19th century, and more specifically the Belle Époque, seized upon this major historical figure to transform him into a symbol with multiple political, cultural, and artistic dimensions.
A builder of medieval Normandy, William the Conqueror has left a lasting imprint on the territory. Several centuries later, Marcel Proust rediscovers these same places, where the landscapes, architectures, and memories attached to these locations inspire his literary universe. By intertwining perspectives, the exhibition invites reflection on the permanence of legacies and how a figure from the Middle Ages continues to feed the modern imagination.
