William II and the cathedral of Monreale
from 08 March 2027
to 30 June 2027
The exhibition aims to narrate the figure of William II of Altavilla, the last great sovereign of the Norman dynasty in Sicily, and the extraordinary role of the Monreale Cathedral as a high artistic expression of Norman civilization in the Mediterranean.
Through works of art, precious items of goldsmithery, documents, educational materials, digital reconstructions, and scientific insights, the exhibition path will illustrate the opulence of the 12th-century Palermitan court, one of the most refined in Europe, a crossroads of Latin, Byzantine, Arab, Jewish, and Norman cultures. Special attention will be given to the marriage between William II and Joan of England, daughter of Henry II Plantagenet, which confirmed the international prestige of the Kingdom of Sicily and strengthened the political and cultural ties between Palermo and the English court. The presence of the image of Saint Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury who was assassinated in 1170 and canonized only a few years later, in the Cathedral of Monreale further attests to such relations. His depiction among the Monreale mosaics represents one of the oldest iconographic examples of the saint outside England and testifies to the speed with which his cult spread to the Norman court.
The exhibition will also offer a reflection on the deeply multicultural character of the Norman Kingdom, highlighting how the Norman Kingdom of Sicily was able to integrate artistic, religious, and technical traditions coming from the East and the West, giving rise to a unique artistic language in the European landscape. A specific section will be dedicated to the construction and decorative techniques of the Monreale Cathedral. Through models, educational materials, and multimedia supports, the public will be able to discover the complexity of creating the mosaics, the techniques of working with glass and gold tesserae, the organization of medieval construction sites, the role of artisans from different areas of the Mediterranean, and the architectural solutions that made Monreale one of the greatest masterpieces of medieval art.
The exhibition will also provide an important opportunity to present to the public the neogothic organ of the Cathedral. Through guided tours, conferences, and dedicated musical moments, the project will enhance this important element of the historical and liturgical heritage of the monumental complex.
Inserted within the framework of Millennium 2027 – European Year of the Normans, the exhibition aims to highlight the European dimension of Norman Sicily and the role of Monreale as a symbolic place of the meeting between different cultures and artistic traditions, proposing to the public a current reflection on intercultural dialogue and the construction of a shared identity in the Mediterranean and Europe.
