Bayeux Tapestry: The Opera

A Guernsey born multimedia celebration of William the Conqueror’s millennium

Bayeux Tapestry: The Opera brings the iconic images of the Bayeux Tapestry to life through a vivid fusion of music, storytelling, and visual art. Three synchronised screens display animated and enhanced scenes from the Tapestry, precisely aligned with a newly composed score that blends stark medieval harmonies with lyrical, expressive melodies. The result is an immersive experience that places audiences at the centre of one of history’s most dramatic narratives.

The story focuses on the rivalry between Harold Godwinson and William the Conqueror, told through the Tapestry’s imagery and original Latin captions. The performance traces Harold’s journey to Normandy, the political tensions that follow, and the decisive Battle of Hastings. Additional texts drawn from Wace’s Roman de Rou enrich the narrative, performed and interpreted by singers accompanied by medieval instruments.

Created in the Channel Islands, the production travels to festivals and venues in Normandy, the UK, and beyond. The creative team brings together expertise in historical music drama, medieval music, Anglo-Norman literature, festival direction, and advanced audio-visual design.

The performance engages a wide audience, including enthusiasts of history, early music, literature, and visual storytelling. Viewers experience life aboard Norman ships, witness councils and battles, and encounter figures of power, conflict, and ambition. The three-screen format creates a dynamic visual environment while preserving the clarity and artistry of the Tapestry.

The opera also incorporates the Alderney-stitched reconstructions of the Tapestry’s lost final panels, including William’s coronation and the construction of the Tower of London. These scenes bring the story to a powerful conclusion, connecting contemporary Channel Islands creativity with one of Europe’s greatest medieval masterpieces.
