Celebrations for the 950th anniversary of the foundation of the Cathedral of Melfi

The celebratory project for the 950 years since the foundation of the Cathedral of Melfi, promoted by the Diocese of Melfi-Rapolla-Venosa, is structured as a multidisciplinary program coordinated by an honorary committee (representatives of institutions) and a scientific committee. The initiative develops through four closely connected areas, capable of fostering dialogue between the rigor of scientific research and the life of the civil, religious, and school community:               1. Academic Study Days: The scientific path will be structured around two study days and an international conference between Melfi and Rome dedicated to the historical and documentary aspects of the Norman events in Melfi and its medieval cathedral. The events will allow a local and international audience to access the knowledge of the religious and political history of the territory and the historical, artistic, and architectural evidence of the cathedral.

2. Celebratory Cultural Events: Events related to the study days aimed at enhancing the historical and artistic artifacts linked to the periods covered, restoring to the city the deep sense of its monumental heritage: guided tours of the castle and the Norman bell tower; guided tours of the cathedral and the diocesan museum.

3. Educational Initiatives: Educational paths designed to involve schools and new generations, transforming the Cathedral into an active laboratory of local identity and memory.

4. Liturgical Celebrations: In this context, the dimension of "cultural heritage" merges with that of "cultual good." Solemn celebrations will take place on the dates that have marked the history of Melfi's faith: from the anniversary of the foundation to the dedication of the Cathedral Basilica, up to the solemnity of the Patron Saint Saint Alexander. These moments rediscover the Cathedral as the beating heart of a millennial devotion that is still relevant.
