The dream of an emperor

from 23 August 2027

to 31 August 2027

The event, now in its sixteenth edition, aims to revisit one of the most significant periods in Sicilian medieval history: the years following the death of Frederick II of Swabia, the "Stupor Mundi," and the rise of his son Conrad IV to the throne, the legitimate heir of the Swabian dynasty. The initiative also seeks to highlight the deep connection between the Norman and Swabian eras. Frederick II was indeed the heir to a political and cultural tradition built by the Norman rulers, who, starting with Roger II, had created an extraordinary synthesis of cultures, peoples, and knowledge in the Kingdom of Sicily. The "Stupor Mundi" embraced this legacy, strengthening Sicily's role as a political and cultural center of the Mediterranean and developing a model of governance that still represents one of the highest points in European history. The day will open with a conference dedicated to the final years of Swabian rule, the relationship between the Norman and Swabian dynasties, and the figure of Conrad IV, featuring scholars and prominent guests from the cultural and academic scene. In the afternoon, the main events that characterized the life of Conrad IV will be reenacted through a striking historical procession that will pass through the town center. The departure is scheduled for 5:00 PM from Piazza Matteotti; the procession will wind through the streets of the village, concluding in the atrium of the Ducal Palace, the ancient Federiciana Domus and a symbolic place of Swabian presence in the area. Through off-stage narratives, costumed performers, and scenic representations, the audience will be led to discover the final years of Frederick II, the regency of Manfred, and the arrival of Conrad IV in Italy, who was raised and trained in Germany to inherit his father's political and imperial legacy. The narrative will also highlight the continuity between the Norman and Swabian kingdoms, showing how the institutions, traditions, and cultural heritage built by the Normans formed the foundation of Frederick's political project. The event will conclude with the “Dinner with the Emperor” event, an experience that will combine historical dissemination and gastronomy. Through a special show cooking, a local chef will present and reinterpret some recipes inspired by medieval tradition, allowing the audience to learn about and taste the flavors, ingredients, and food customs that characterized Norman and Swabian courts.
