Festivalia. Archaeology tells its story.

from 25 July 2026

to 27 July 2026

The archaeological dissemination format and Public Archaeology "Festivalia. Archaeology tells its story," conceived by Professor Francesca Sogliani in 2017 and now in its seventh edition in 2026, takes place at the medieval archaeological site of Satrianum, in the locality of Torre di Satriano, Municipality of Tito, at the conclusion of the summer archaeological campaign conducted by the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage of the University of Basilicata. For the first time structured over two days, July 25 and 26, Festivalia offers an immersive experience in the medieval settlement abandoned in the 15th century, transforming the site into a narrative space where archaeology, history, and community intertwine. The narrative path created by the archaeologists unfolds among the structures emerged from the latest archaeological investigations conducted by Unibas, also in collaboration with Université Rennes 2. Along the path within the fortified settlement, amidst the village houses, the tower, the cathedral, and the episcopal see, visitors will meet artisans and merchants intent on reviving the ancient medieval workshops. Amid the sounds of tools at work, the tales of ancient crafts, and the aromas of dishes inspired by recipes from the time, visitors can immerse themselves in the authentic atmosphere of a medieval fortified settlement. The heart of the evening on Saturday, July 25, will be the theatrical performance "The Destruction of Satrianum. Intrigues, Struggles, and Passions in the Kingdom of Naples," staged at the foot of the Tower. Through an intense and engaging narrative, the audience will be led into the events that marked the fate of the ancient settlement, amid power struggles, shifting alliances, and fascinating legends linked to the figure of Joanna II of Anjou, culminating in the dramatic fire that led to its abandonment. On Sunday, July 26, Festivalia will continue with a journey through the places of Satrianum and its medieval workshops, animated by artisans and storytellers. Tastings inspired by the traditions of the time, music, stories, and demonstrations of ancient crafts will accompany visitors in an immersive experience, capable of restoring the colors, sounds, and atmospheres of daily life in the Middle Ages.
