The Legend of the Templars – Hugo de' Pagani and the Challenge of the Myth

The event "The Legend of the Templars – Ugo de’ Pagani and the Challenge of the Myth" takes place in the historical center of Forenza and evokes, through historical sources and symbolic suggestions, the birth of the Order of the Knights Templar. The initiative is inspired by the figure of Ugo de’ Pagani, considered the founder and first Grand Master of the Order, and the son – according to documentation published by L.R. Ménager in 1959 – of Pagano de’ Pagani, lord of “castrum Florentiae,” that is, ancient Forenza. The costumed procession, featuring over two hundred performers in historical attire, winds through the village amidst banners, recitations, and spectacular interventions, before converging in Piazza Regina Margherita where a theatrical dramatization takes place. The show, set between 1099 and 1118, tells the story of the departure of the eight Norman knights led by Ugo de’ Pagani to Jerusalem, with the intent to protect pilgrims and the Holy Places, giving rise to the Order of the Temple, recognized as a monastic-knightly order by the Church. The entire event is enriched by the presence of medieval camps, falconry shows, staged combat, dances, musicians, and fire-eaters. The event also highlights the memory of a historic Templar settlement near Forenza, in the locality of San Martino “de pauperibus,” which could be uncovered through future archaeological excavations.
