Reenactment

The event "From the Lombards to the Normans" takes place in the historic center of Acerenza and recalls the transfer of power between the Lombard and Norman dominations around the year 1080, a period that also marks the construction of the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Canio.

The reenactment, which involves about two hundred participants in medieval costumes, winds through the streets of the village and culminates in the square of the Cathedral, transformed into a stage set for the theatrical representation of the meeting between the Norman Robert Guiscard and Archbishop Arnaldo, who was entrusted with the continuation of the Cathedral's construction with the support of the Norman duke.

Every square in the center is animated by drummers, musicians, fire-eaters, falconers, and comedians, according to a dramaturgy that guides the audience through the story and culture of medieval Acerenza. Along the path, it is possible to visit the medieval market, taste dishes inspired by the cuisine of the time, and wear period costumes to immerse oneself in the atmosphere of the village.

The event includes a prologue with a competition among the four ancient gates of the city – Porta Maggiore, Porta Venosina, Porta Vetrana, and Porta San Canio – that compete in games inspired by history.
