The Norman-Swabian conquest of the fief of Rapolla.

from 11 October 2026

to 12 October 2026

The re-enactment "The Norman-Swedish conquest of the fief of Rapolla by King Manfred and Galvano Lancia" unfolds through the streets of the historic center of Rapolla during the event “Urban Park of the Wineries of Rapolla.” The re-enactment preserves the memory of the events that led to the siege of the Lucanian town by the troops of the condottiero Galvano Lancia on the orders of King Manfred, son of Frederick II, who could not tolerate the persistent alliance of the city and diocese of Rapolla with the Pope. To carry out the plan to reconquer all the territories of Lucera and Puglia, Manfred relied on Galvano Lancia, who worked towards the subjugation of all the dioceses not yet subjected in Basilicata. In this context, the resistance of Rapolla took place, which "loyal to the Pope" within its fortified walls, became the protagonist in the winter between 1254 and February 1255 of a fierce resistance. Rapolla did not want to bow down to pay homage to the Swabian house and efforts at diplomacy were prolonged in vain, first with offers and then with threats. Galvano Lancia himself even went personally to the fortified citadel to request peace, but to no positive outcome. In February 1255, Galvano Lancia returned with a multitude of armed horsemen and foot soldiers, surrounding the entire village which was assaulted multiple times. The people of Rapolla defended themselves boldly for entire months, until the city was conquered with countless slaughter of its inhabitants.
