THE NORMANS IN THE WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN.
from 23 November 2026
to 24 November 2026
NEW RELATIONS AND LEGACIES
Between the 11th and 12th centuries, the Norman presence in Southern Italy led to profound political, social, and cultural transformations that contributed to the definition of new territorial and institutional arrangements in medieval Southern Italy. Through the establishment of the Kingdom of Sicily and the consolidation of power in the regions of Southern Italy, the Normans promoted an intense building activity that affected castles, noble residences, cathedrals, monasteries, and urban complexes, giving rise to an architectural heritage of extraordinary historical and artistic significance.
The conference aims to:
• deepen the ways in which the Normans operated in the transformation of the urban and territorial landscape of Southern Italy;
• analyze the architectural and construction characteristics of castles, palaces, churches, and monasteries of the Norman age;
• investigate the relationships between architecture, political power, and territorial organization;
• encourage dialogue between scholars, cultural institutions, and organizations engaged in the protection and enhancement of the medieval heritage of Norman times;
• reflect on contemporary perspectives of conservation, restoration, and enjoyment of Norman architectural heritage;
• involve schools and the local population in a day where the research of students from the master's degree in archaeology for tourism will be presented, along with activities for a non-expert audience.
Contributions related to case studies, territorial research, historical-architectural analyses, archaeological investigations, restoration methodologies, new scientific approaches, projects for the enhancement of the Norman heritage of Southern Italy, and GIS on tourist and cultural routes in Campania and Basilicata are welcome.
