Palace of Saint Gervasius – From Frederick II to Manfred

from 22 August 2027

to 24 August 2027

The event "Palatium Sancti Gervasii – From Frederick II to Manfred" takes place in the historic center of Palazzo San Gervasio and evokes the presence of King Manfred, the favored son of Frederick II, who stayed at the Palatium Regium Sancti Gervasii during a long convalescence in 1255. According to historical sources, it was during this time that Manfred translated into Latin the work De pomo sive de morte Aristotilis, an allegorical dialogue in which the philosopher, near death, urges his disciples to live according to virtue and philosophy. The story intertwines with the local tradition that connects the king's healing to walks in the woods of the fief and the salubriousness of the place, so much so that the main street of the town now bears his name. The event aims to enhance the historical heritage of the Domus palazzese, an ancient royal stable and site for breeding horses of the Swabian Kingdom, recalling the site's function as a hunting lodge favored by Frederick II and his son. The program includes historical parades, equestrian shows and falconry, medieval markets, and theatrical performances dedicated to the most significant episodes of Manfred's life. Partnership: Basilicata Region, Matera Basilicata 2019 Foundation, Municipality of Palazzo San Gervasio.
