Saint Nicholas and the arrival of the Normans - Feast of Saint Nicholas
from 07 May 2027
to 09 May 2027
Great popular event – Religious festival – Historical reenactment – Urban spectacle
As part of the Millennium 2027 – European Year of the Normans, the traditional Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari aims to be one of the most significant events in the celebratory program dedicated to Norman heritage in Europe. The
event will indeed provide the opportunity to highlight the central role played by Bari and Puglia in the medieval Mediterranean and in the relations between Southern Italy and other territories influenced by the Norman presence.
The feast, which every year commemorates the arrival in Bari of the relics of Saint Nicholas in 1087, promoted precisely by the Normans who had defeated the Catapan and the Byzantine authorities, attracts thousands of pilgrims and visitors from all over Italy and abroad, and in 2027 will take on a European dimension, becoming a privileged meeting space for the communities and territories involved in the Millennium.
The city will transform into a large open-air stage, where spirituality, history, culture, and spectacle will intertwine in a rich program of initiatives. In addition to the traditional religious celebrations and the evocative reenactment of the arrival by sea of the Saint's relics, a special historical procession for the Millennium will be organized, dedicated to the Norman presence in the South and the role it has played in building relationships between peoples, cultures, and territories.
The procession will see the participation of historical groups and Norman reenactors from Puglia, Sicily, Calabria, Campania, and other Southern Italian territories affected by the Norman legacy, alongside groups of performers from Normandy and other partner territories of Millennium 2027. Knights, ladies, armigers, musicians, banner bearers, and historical groups will help to reconstruct the richness and variety of the Norman world, offering the public a choral representation of the diverse identities that have contributed to the construction of medieval Europe.
Particular attention will be devoted to the international dimension of the event, through the participation of artists and companies from Normandy and other partner territories. The program will indeed include street theater performances, itinerant performances, historical animations, acrobatics, and circus arts, which will enliven the squares and streets of the historic center, transforming the city into a meeting space between popular traditions, historical heritage, and contemporary creation.
The initiative aims to enhance the figure of Saint Nicholas, a saint venerated throughout the Christian world and a symbol of dialogue between East and West, as well as a connector among the various European territories involved in the Millennium. From this perspective, the feast will become not only a religious and identity celebration but also an occasion to reflect on the role of cultural heritage as a tool for cooperation, mutual understanding, and the building of a shared European citizenship.
Through the involvement of religious and civil institutions, historical associations, local communities, and international partners, the Feast of Saint Nicholas 2027 aims to represent one of the symbolic appointments of Millennium 2027 – European Year of the Normans, capable of uniting history, faith, spectacle, and intercultural dialogue in one of the most emblematic cities of the Mediterranean.
