Threads Across a Millenium
A Collective Textile Journey Through Time

“Threads Across a Millenium” is a large-scale, evolving textile artwork inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry. Artists, students and members of the public across Guernsey and partner regions work together to create the piece, which develops throughout 2027 as new textile panels are gradually added.

Organised around a broad historical timeline spanning from the Norman period to the present day, the project explores both change and continuity in everyday life over the course of a millennium. Contributors engage with shared themes such as home, work, belief, travel, craft, food and community, rather than focusing on specific historical events.

Using drawing, stitching and mixed textile techniques, participants create panels in galleries, schools and community settings, with some contributions produced remotely before being incorporated into the installation.

Displayed across galleries, schools and community venues during 2027, the work is brought together at the end of the year for a final exhibition at Sula Gallery, forming a collective portrait of shared Norman heritage and contemporary European identity.

A dedicated space at Sula Gallery welcomes visitors to drop in and stitch throughout the year. Panels are also created across the island in various organisations, events and venues
