The Thursdays of the Barony - Drinking in Normandy in the Middle Ages

from 27 May 2027

to 28 May 2027

Conference

Marie Casset, honorary lecturer and associate member of CRAHAM – University of Caen Normandy, invites you to discover an unexpected aspect of medieval history: drinking in Normandy during the Middle Ages.

Using written sources, images of banquets, and archaeological artifacts, she reveals a true culture of beverages, marked by diverse practices and a clear social hierarchy. Water, Norman wine, ale, or cider share the grand tables with wines from Gascony, Burgundy, Spain, or Portugal, while local cider and wine remain associated with the popular classes. The conference also highlights the evolution of productions, from the medieval vineyard to the apple orchards, influenced by climate change starting in the 15th century.
