Unknown Normandy: La Normandie Inconnue

Regarding Shadows: The Dawn of Photography in the Channel Islands

A celebration of experimental early photography of the Channel Islands, as seen through the lens of the exiled family and friends of Victor Hugo.

An examination of what the homesick French exiles found familiar about the landscapes, people and language of the islands and their shared Norman heritage.

François-Victor Hugo, Victor Hugo's youngest son, was fascinated by the echoes of Norman heritage that he uncovered lingering in the islands, both in language, culture and laws, as well as the appearance of the islands and inhabitants.

Through excerpts from books, poems, photographs and other artefacts, the exhibition celebrates this shared identity.

The exhibition also examines the artistic inspiration that the exiles found on the Channel Islands through written and visual arts, and the legacy of this creative group.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Musée Victor Hugo - Maison Vacquerie in Villequier, Normandy, Hauteville House and the Victor Hugo Centre in Guernsey, Guernsey Heritage, and Jersey Heritage Trust.
