Visions of Stupor Mundi
from 30 June 2026
to 01 July 2026
The interventions carried out will be presented during a conference attended by Vito Bardi, President of the Regional Council of Basilicata, Tommaso Serafini, Director of the Museums and Archaeological Parks of Melfi and Venosa, Massimo Osanna, new Head of the Cultural Activities Department of the Ministry of Culture, former General Director of Museums, Rita Orlando, General Director of the Matera-Basilicata 2019 Foundation, Giuseppe Mecca, Mayor of Avigliano.
For the first time, the public will be able to admire the Minor Courtyard of the Castle, restored to its ancient splendor following extraordinary maintenance work that ensured safety, improved accessibility, and enhanced the Minor Courtyard, allowing for permanent use. This extraordinary area, in the center of which stands the monumental donjon, also preserves the archaeological remains from the earliest phases of the Castle.
The project also includes the inauguration of the new setup for the Archaeological Exhibition. The exhibition route, renewed and integrated with interactive digital supports such as multimedia totems, video projections, and audioguides accessible via smartphones, will offer visitors an engaging and accessible experience.
The visit to the new spaces opened to the public will be guided by Prof. Fulvio Delle Donne, scientific director of Fantastico Medioevo.
At dusk, the immersive installation "Federico II - Stupor mundi" will be inaugurated in the Major Courtyard, created by the Fargo Productions team under the direction of Nicola Ragone and with texts by Andrea Di Consoli. The installation combines light art and videomapping on the facades of the major courtyard, accompanied by an experimental sound research spread throughout the environment.
The work combines historical narrative and poetic interpretation, constructing a story that proceeds on two levels: on one hand, the chronology of events that mark the life of Frederick II of Swabia, and on the other, the portrayal of an intimate, complex, and profoundly contemporary image of the sovereign.
