Normandy–Flanders: growing cooperation
In the run‑up to Millenium, Normandy and Flanders are strengthening their economic, cultural, and tourism cooperation, building on a shared history and concrete joint projects.
Several recent exchanges have helped strengthen relations between Normandy and Flanders, long-standing historical and major economic partners in Europe. In this context, an economic visit took place from 12 to 14 January 2026.
This renewed rapprochement forms part of the dialogue initiated between Normandy and Flanders around the Millennium. It is notably grounded in the figure of Matilda of Flanders, Duchess of Normandy and Queen of England, who embodies a historic link between Normandy, Flanders and England.
More broadly, this dynamic builds on the historical, cultural and economic interconnections that united Normandy, Flanders and south-east England during the Middle Ages. At that time, these territories formed a structuring hub in Europe, marked by the development of trade, industry, education and artistic exchanges.
The shared objective is to build a lasting relationship between Normandy and Flanders.
