Nicosia in bloom

In 2027, the XXXIII edition of "Nicosia in Fiore" will take place, one of the most representative events of the artistic and cultural tradition of the city, capable of attracting numerous visitors from all over Sicily and other regions of Italy every year. The 2027 edition will be dedicated to the theme "The Normans of the Great Count Roger in 11th and 12th Century Sicily," with the aim of enhancing the role played by the Normans in the construction of the historical, cultural, and political identity of medieval Sicily. Special attention will be given to the figure of the Great Count Roger d'Altavilla, the protagonist of the Norman conquest of the island and the founder of a model of governance that would lay the foundations for the subsequent great era of the Kingdom of Sicily. Along Via Giambattista Li Volsi, about twenty large artistic panels measuring 300 x 500 cm will be created, depicting historical episodes, characters, symbols, and significant moments of the Norman epic. The works will be made using natural flowers, colored salt, sand, soil, and other decorative materials, according to the tradition of artistic infiorate. The creation of the floral carpets will be managed by FIDAPA, the promoter and organizer of the event, with the involvement of cultural associations, service clubs, and local associations, in a participatory process that sees the local community as the protagonist of the event. The setup activities will begin on Saturday afternoon and continue into the late evening, progressively transforming the street into a large open-air artistic workshop. Visitors will be able to witness the various phases of the creation of the works, observing the efforts of volunteers, artists, and associations involved in the composition of the panels. The official inauguration will be held on Sunday morning, when the floral path will be completed and open to the public. Alongside the exhibition of the artistic carpets, the program includes numerous cultural, musical, and food and wine initiatives aimed at promoting local traditions and the historical heritage of the area. Conferences, moments of entertainment, exhibitions, and tastings of typical products will contribute to creating an atmosphere of celebration and participation, offering visitors an immersive experience in the history and culture of Norman Sicily. Through the universal language of flowers and ephemeral art, "Nicosia in Fiore" intends to tell one of the most important pages of the island's history, promoting knowledge of the Norman heritage and strengthening the community's sense of belonging to its historical and cultural roots.
