WACE: The Norman Conquests

The Story Beast presents a live stage adaptation of Roman de Rou by Wace

Following a preview at the British Embassy in Paris, Edinburgh Comedy Award–nominated poet and storyteller The Story Beast marks the millennium of the birth of William the Conqueror by bringing a 12th-century epic vividly into the 21st century.

Around 850 years ago, the Norman monk Wace composes Roman de Rou, a 16,000-line verse history of the Dukes of Normandy. The poem traces events from the Viking leader Rollo’s conquest of Normandy in 911 through to the Anglo-Norman empire of Henry II in the 1160s. Just as the Bayeux Tapestry narrates history through embroidery, Wace recounts the story of 1066 and the Norman Conquest in verse—depicting William’s strategies against Harold, the Battle of Hastings, the coronation, and more.

This dynamic adaptation by John Henry Falle brings Wace’s narrative to life through storytelling, physical performance, and rhythm. It presents a vivid medieval world, blending historical detail with energy and humour, in a style that moves beyond traditional courtly romance.

The performance features dramatic episodes, legendary characters, and imaginative storytelling, all delivered with The Story Beast’s distinctive style.

WACE: The Norman Conquests offers performances ranging from 10 minutes to 1 hour. Selected performances also include live illustration by Observer cartoonist and former Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell.
